Types of Curtain to Install in a Bedroom

Interior decoration is very personal. That’s why it’s so confusing to know what to choose. When you are designing your new bedroom you will need to try and see the whole picture before you begin. Today we will be looking at the types of curtains to install in your bedroom.

Types of Curtain

There are many different types of bedroom curtain that you can choose from. These include:

– Tab Top Curtains
– Eyelet Curtains
– Tailored Pleated Curtains
– Box Pleat Curtains

Tab Top bedroom curtains are designed to fit onto a curtain pole rather than a track. These add a contemporary look to any room.

Eyelet curtains are also designed to be used with curtain poles. The pole fits through the eyelets themselves. This creates a simple look where the pole is visible through the curtain.

Pleated curtains are much more traditional but can look great in some bedrooms. The style of pleat you choose is completely up to your taste.

Curtain Colors

When you are shopping for curtains for your bedroom, you will need to give some careful consideration to the color. Your bedroom needs to be peaceful and comfortable. For this reason, you should probably stick to neutral colors or calming colors where possible.

Type of Material

Curtains are available in a variety of different materials. The popular materials include:
– Silk
– Cotton
– Plain Material
– Printed Material
– Embroidered Curtains
– Suede Fabric

Silk curtains create a very uxorious and sophisticated look. These are ideal for a bedroom when you are trying to create a fashionable look.

Cotton curtains are typically plain but are high quality. These feel nice to the touch and will soften the look of your room.

Suede material will create a modern look to your room as well. The only thing you might find is that suede will be too hot to use in Singapore.

You will then need to decide whether you want plain or patterned curtains. Plain curtains are ideal for a minimalist bedroom. If you do want to introduce patterns then these can either be printed or embroidered.

Printed patterns are a lot cheaper than embroidery. This is because the design is digitally printed directly onto the fabric. You will be able to find printed designs in hundreds of different styles.

Embroidery is where the pattern is stitched onto the fabric of the curtain. As a result, this will be more expensive, but it is much more luxurious.

Lightweight Material

If you research curtains for other countries, most people will recommend buying thermal insulated curtains to keep the heat in. However, here in Singapore, this isn’t necessary. Due to our location close to the equator, the temperature remains high all year round. As a result, you should choose a lightweight material which can block out the light, without making your bedroom too hot.

Ready-Made or Custom Made?

When buying bedrooms curtains, you have two options. You can either choose ready-made curtains or have them custom made. You will have much more choice when choosing custom curtains since there are lots of different types and designs of fabric you can choose from.

Easy to Operate Curtains

If you find pulling the actual curtain to shut it too difficult, then you should choose curtain rails with an opener fitted. These can either be manually operated with a pull string or with an electric motor. If you are choosing motorized electric curtains then bear in mind you will need to have an outlet within reach to plug into.

Alternatives to Curtains

Of course, you don’t have to have a curtain in your bedroom if you don’t want to. There are many other window coverings you may wish to consider. These include:

– Vertical Blinds
– Horizontal Blinds
– Roll-up Blinds
– Roman Blinds

These blinds can either be used along with curtains, or instead of curtains. Blinds are typically very easy to install, especially if they can be fixed to the window frame, rather than into the wall.

Installing your New Curtains

You may be able to reuse your current curtain rail or pole if it’s still in good working order. This will make it very straightforward to change your curtain. If you do need to fit new hardware, then make sure this is installed correctly. Check that it is screwed into something solid and not just into the plasterboard.

As I mentioned at the start of the guide, the decor is very personal. There is no right or wrong answer, you just have to choose something you will be happy with.
